Robotic Cardiac Surgery with the daVinci Surgical System

Robotic Surgery Comes to Lankenau!Lankenau Hospital surgeons performed the first completely endoscopic robotic cardiac procedure - a mitral valve repair - in the Delaware Valley in February 2005 using the da Vinci ® Surgical System. By adding the da Vinci to its list of technological advancements, Lankenau became the first hospital in suburban Philadelphia to offer robotic surgery from start to finish.

Dr. Goldman, a pioneer in minimally-invasive valve surgery, says the addition of the daVinci system further enhances the capabilities of Lankenau's Heart Center.

"Adding the da Vinci to our vast range of advanced surgical capabilities dramatically expands our ability to perform minimally invasive techniques. It enhances our capabilities of performing major cardiac procedures endoscopically through tiny ports of access, providing our patients with a less traumatic and more cosmetically pleasing alternative to open surgery."
~ Dr. Scott Goldman

The surgeon simply makes three or four tiny access ports measuring a mere 1 to 2 centimeters in diameter (See fig. 1), using the da Vinci instruments. Through the ports, the surgeon then navigates the robotic instrument arms and endoscopic arm during the procedure. This gives the surgeon a magnified viewing area previously not possible for some procedures.

The da Vinci offers several advantages over previous robotic devices. Seated at the master console, the surgeon navigates the surgical instruments using hand and foot controls. Each natural hand, wrist and finger movement is seamlessly translated into corresponding micro-movements of the instruments (See fig. 2).
